It was not long after the terror attack in Manchester that I heard this song from Rend Collective, “Weep With Me.” It is a song of lament based on all the heartache that we see in the world around us.
The song led me to this simple thought. Perhaps we need to drop all the angry, cynical, discourse on social media and ask God to break our hearts.
Do we feel that we are reflecting God’s love for this world with our political rhetoric?
Will people be drawn closer to God through the words we use on Twitter and Facebook?
I get the anger. I really do. I feel it sometimes too. But I think there is a deeper place that God is calling us to. I believe we are stopping short of where God wants to take us. Anger is easy. Brokenness requires the Holy Spirit. We need to move beyond the “righteous” (let’s be real, many times it does not sound or look very righteous) anger and ask God to break our heart. To cause us to weep as Christ weeped over the lost condition of this world.
Now as He drew near, He saw the city and wept over it, saying, “If you had known, even you, especially in this your day, the things that make for your peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes.” -Luke 19:41-42
